There's not too many of us that can survive for too long without having a job. And when the time comes when you lose it (everyone experiences this at some point in their life), what are your first few steps in obtaining employment? Where do you turn? First of all, it's not always such a bad idea to just take a break for a week or so (if not longer!). Overcoming the tremendous amount of emotion that is sure to follow a job loss is key! Often, that emotional damage can act as a deterrent for future employers. Spending time with family, friends, relatives, and others can help you cope with the initial difficulty of lost employment.
Next, start contacting everybody you know! This could be the single most important element of moving forward! In the job world, it's not always about what you know but who you know; with that in mind, tell friends, neighbors, relatives, and family about your availability. More often than not, somebody is going to somebody who will be friends with somebody else who is looking for you! Don't be bashful! Get out there and talk to people. Though to many, the loss of employment is embarrassing, you need to make sure you overcome your pride or else it may be much longer than you want for another opportunity to come floating your way. Last, update your resume and be prepared to sell yourself. Image is everything when you get hired, so make sure to go shopping and get something that will impress on that interview. Take time to have others read over your resume to ensure that mistakes will be eliminated. Be proactive! Be aggressive! If you take this kind of strong approach, you will have a job in no time! Your family and finances won't suffer nearly as bad if you implement these principles and go to work!
